Patch Notes

What has changed in Shadowmere Tales, newest first.

Changes

17 Oct 2026 Patch Notes

  • Launch
    • Shadowmere Tales is open to everyone. Nova went live on Saturday 17 October. Dan launches on Tuesday 20 October at 10:00 UTC (21:00 AEDT): reserve your Dan kingdoms from the Kingdoms page before then. WhiteSands, the unranked test continent, is always open.
    • New look. A new castle logo on the front pages, a new browser and app icon, and a proper preview picture when you share a link. If you still see the old icon, refresh the page or reinstall the app shortcut.
    • Privacy Policy. There is now a short Privacy Policy, linked from the front page and the sign-up page.
  • Your account
    • Stay logged in longer. Idle time before you are logged out is now 2 hours. If you ticked “Remember me on this device”, an expired session now signs you back in automatically instead of dropping you at the login page.
    • Shadowlord names. A name is up to 12 letters or numbers (no spaces or symbols), capital letters are kept, and two names that differ only by capitals count as the same name.
    • Phone menu. View Character and Customise Character now close the side menu on narrow screens.
  • Quests
    • Raid and Bombardment quests now complete when your report says Success (the defender lost at least as large a share of troops as you did), instead of using a separate hidden rule.
    • The Mad God's quests now appear under the game quest filter, and new ones say in their description exactly what counts as completing them.
  • Alliances
    • Alliance Win / Loss. An alliance's record counts military attacks made by its members (against anyone) and military attacks on its player kingdoms. Barbarian kingdoms defending no longer add to it.
Changes

14 Oct 2026 Patch Notes

  • Army Commands
    • Rules cards fold away. Each “How operations work” card is now collapsed to its heading. Tap a heading to open it; opening one closes the others, so the page no longer pushes your kingdom stats far down the screen on a phone.
    • Military Attack wording fixed. When there is not enough free land, the buildings taken are captured by the attacker, not destroyed. The rules card now says so.
  • Magic
    • Blood Lust is now a Chaos spell (it was listed under Life). It still cannot be studied.
    • Clearer Blood Lust text. It doubles troop damage (not equipment damage) on both attack and defence, and kills only your own population each turn, turning the slain into food. The Orc and Ogre racial descriptions now say “double troop damage”.
  • Kingdom
    • Hire Units shows full numbers. The Amount column no longer switches to thousands (K) once a stack passes a million.
  • Alliances
    • Alliance Members page updated. The intro now describes the alliance treasury (members deposit gold; the top ranked kingdoms spend it on rank ups and improvements).
    • Member cap explained. The cap is a soft cap. It counts full player members, but not kingdoms of players under level 3 (alliance Squires). A Squire can level up and stay in the alliance, so an alliance can eventually show more members than its cap. This is intended, not a bug.
Changes

12 Oct 2026 Patch Notes

  • Army Commands
    • How operations work. New rules cards at the bottom of the Army Commands page explain each operation (Military Attack, Raid, Bombard, Spy, Loot and Assassinate): which units fight, how big losses can be, what is taken or damaged, and where the dead go. They show the basic rules between two ordinary kingdoms; real results are also affected by races, spells, improvements, collectables and continent settings.
    • Find kingdoms holding Assets. Where a Continent has collectables, the target list now has filter buttons for Heroes, Treasures and Landmarks, and a small icon beside each kingdom shows which kinds of Asset it holds. The same list appears on the Spells and Spy Reports pages.
  • Combat
    • Lich King is now shown in the combat report. When either side has a Lich King, both players see it listed in the report’s Impacts. In a Military Attack it also tells you that the Lich King claims the enemy dead: they are destroyed and never reach their graveyard, so Heal, Resurrection and regeneration cannot bring them back.
    • Caught spies are now destroyed instead of going to your graveyard. (Caught thieves still go to the graveyard, and caught assassins were already destroyed.)
    • Military Attack luck fix. A gap in the random damage table gave the maximum +/-50% swing about 3% of the time instead of the intended 1%. Huge swings are now as rare as designed.
  • Quality of life
    • Cast Spell: the mana buttons now include 0, +100K and 33%.
    • Build: after building equipment you now stay on the Equipment page instead of being sent back to Buildings, and the step-size buttons gain 10k, 100k and 1M for equipment.
Changes

11 Oct 2026

  • WhiteSands sandbox
    • Saved builds replace the old “Save to Kingdom Store” section on the Setup Kingdom page. Each account has 5 private slots. A build is a snapshot of a kingdom’s stats (race, land, buildings, troops and their experience, laborers, scholars, population, equipment, study, gold, food, mana, morale, and military wins and losses). Save this kingdom, or any of your other kingdoms, into a slot with a name, and Load it back onto your sandbox kingdom whenever you like. Loading costs no turn and replaces what the sandbox kingdom has now. Saving over a used slot, loading and deleting all ask first.
  • Exploring
    • Hunt Food bonuses now work. Assets that raise (or lower) the food your rangers find when hunting showed in the hunting estimate but were not applied to the real hunt. They are now, and the extra food werewolves and vampires get from their population is scaled by them too.
    • The amount of land found when exploring the unknown now uses the same calculation as the claim new land button, so the two are consistent. Land found while exploring the unknown is very slightly different as a result.
  • Alliances
    • Alliance levels are now called Ranks, so the word “level” belongs to Improvements alone. The button is now Rank Up and the rank list no longer uses arrows. Nothing about how ranks work has changed.
    • The Plans box on the Improvements page is clearer. It shows how many Plans are available and explains what Plans are for, how an Improvement is unlocked (one Plan and one million gold), how many Improvements your alliance began with (and which ones), and when more Plans are earned.
    • Investiture Court level 15. The Investiture Court can now be raised to level 15. At level 15, every kingdom in the alliance gains an extra chance whenever one of its commands succeeds against a kingdom that holds an Asset of the right kind: a successful Loot may also steal a Treasure, a successful Assassination may also kidnap a Hero, and a successful Raid may also capture a Landmark. The chance is 50%, and if the target holds several Assets of that kind, one is taken at random. The attack itself needs nothing special. The reports show what was taken, and the capture is announced to the whole Continent.
Changes

10 Oct 2026

  • Alliance treasury log
    • The Improvements page now has a Treasury log at the bottom. Press Show treasury log to see every deposit and every treasury spend, newest first, with the date and time, the kingdom, how much gold, and what it was for (a deposit, an alliance level up, an Improvement, or a Forced Transfer).
    • Every member of the alliance can read it. Entries stay in the log if a kingdom later leaves the alliance, and the log is cleared when a Continent resets.
  • Alliance leadership
    • The founder of a new alliance no longer starts with 10 million gold credited to them for ranking purposes. Leadership ranking now comes only from gold that a kingdom has really deposited into the treasury.
    • An alliance whose members have not deposited anything yet is no longer mistaken for an empty alliance, so new applicants must be accepted as normal instead of joining on their own.
  • News
    • The green notices that tell members an alliance level or Improvement was bought now appear once on the News page and then clear, instead of being kept as permanent news items.
  • Spells
    • Mana Sap and the Dark Elf special Dark Power now work at half power against barbarians whoever casts them. Before, Dark Power was cut to a third and other casters were not reduced. The spellbook text has been updated to match.
Changes

9 Oct 2026

  • Alliance classes
    • There are now two alliance classes: Offensive and Defensive. Information and Communication alliances no longer exist.
    • Both classes can build every alliance Improvement. Each class starts with two Improvements already at level 1, free: Offensive gets Cartography and War College, Defensive gets Spy Network and Central Bank.
    • Class special functions have moved. Defensive alliances can view a fellow member’s Detailed Status and get an alert when a member comes under attack. Offensive alliances can share spy and scry reports and share maps.
  • Alliance levels and Improvements
    • Levelling up an alliance and buying Improvements is now much cheaper, so teams can invest in them sooner. Reaching alliance level 100 costs about a fifth of what it did, and taking an Improvement to level 20 costs about a quarter.
    • New Plans replace the old alliance-level unlock gates. Starting a new Improvement (taking it from level 0 to 1) uses one Plan, permanently. A new alliance has one Plan to spend, and it earns another every 5 alliance levels.
    • An Improvement can no longer be higher than the alliance level, so levelling the alliance up keeps mattering.
    • Mana Conflux is now described as the Racial Mana Mod: it adds to your race’s base mana, so it helps the least magical races the most. Kingdoms with no Mana Conflux no longer receive a small free bonus from it, so their mana is slightly lower than before.
    • Supply Lines now stores twice as much food at every level (about 10 million at level 20).
  • New Improvements page
    • The Improvements page has been redesigned. It shows the treasury, your Plans and the alliance level at the top, with a cost table for the next alliance levels.
    • Each Improvement now has a level meter, what it gives now and at the next level, the cost of the next level, the cost to reach your current limit and the maximum, and how far the treasury can take it today.
    • A target level slider on each card prices a whole plan, including any alliance levels you would need first.
    • Improvements you already have are listed first, then the ones you have not started.
  • Collectable legendary assets
    • The Investiture Court has been re-priced. Forced Sale now needs Court level 3, Appropriate needs level 8 and Forced Transfer needs level 11. The Court now goes up to level 11.
    • Appropriate now works on any legend held by a vassal, including Landmarks.
    • The 24 hour lock on newly arrived legends has been removed. Forced Sale, Appropriate and Forced Transfer can be used on a legend straight away.
Changes

7 Oct 2026

  • Quests
    • Fixed a bug where a quest offering ordinary items as the reward (troops, gold, food, equipment and so on) was announced but never actually created, and the reward was never taken from your kingdom. These quests now work properly: the reward leaves your kingdom and the quest appears.
    • Other quest-related bug fixes. Try out making some quests!
  • Collectable legendary assets
    • Once a legend arrives at a kingdom (by being found, captured in combat, appropriated or transferred), it is locked for 24 hours. During that time it cannot be used with Forced Sale, Appropriate or Forced Transfer. Locked collectables are greyed out in the alliance leadership lists, with the time remaining shown.
    • Taking over a barbarian as a vassal does not start a lock on its assets.
    • Collectables have been rebalanced in general. Modifiers are smaller. Bloodlust replaced with Frenzy.
  • Community
    • When a new Shadowlord registers, every kingdom now gets a pink notice in its news, so the newcomer can be greeted in the general forums and in chat.
Changes

5 Oct 2026

  • Assassination
    • Missions can now be interrupted; you get a partial success where you lose some of the damage. A mission that fails with the weaker side still fails outright.
    • The random part of assassination damage now scales with your power. Before, a weak attacker who got lucky got more random damage than their power deserved.
    • Results use a new layout with a title, a picture and separate sections. Both players (currently) see the full workings:
      • the force breakdown, with the defender’s troop and building contributions;
      • the assassins caught;
      • the success roll and the damage roll.
  • Loot
    • Results use the new layout, with (currently) a breakdown of forces, the rolls, and a “haul” box. The haul box shows what the thieves could carry, what the defender held, what was protected and what was taken.
    • Fixed Looting Maps.
  • Raid and Bombard
    • Results use the new layout, with (currently) damage and absorption by source, a step-by-step workings box, and the plunder box on raids.
  • WhiteSands
    • The Setup Kingdom page can now clone one of your other kingdoms. Pick a kingdom and press COPY STATS to copy its race, land, buildings, troops, study levels, gold, food, mana, morale, wins and losses.
  • Alliances
    • Every leadership action is now open to the top 6 ranked members (it was the top 3 in places). That covers Level Ups, Improvements, Eject, Appropriate, Forced Sale and Forced Transfer, the Members and Assets panels, Forum controls and editing the alliance description.
    • Rank ties are now broken by gold contributed, then kingdom score, then kingdom name.
Changes

4 Oct 2026

  • Barbarians:
    • Barbarian kingdoms are now rebuilt with more variety each time they reset. Some will be packed with more troops or gear, and their defence against assassinations is stronger than before.
    • Fixed a bug where Ogre, Troll and Sprite barbarians didn’t get their specific racial troop experience level adjustments.
  • Taking Assets in battle: the chance of capturing a Hero, Treasure or Landmark after a successful military attack now depends on score.
    • It is 25% if the defender’s score is equal to or higher than yours, dropping to 0% at half your score or lower.
    • Each Asset the defender holds after the first adds +1%, so a defender with many Assets is always at some risk.
    • Capturing Assets is now rarer overall.
  • Vassals: the chance of a barbarian converting to your alliance on a successful military break is now 25% plus the percentage of land you took. Bigger breaks convert more often.
  • Alliance Forced Transfer: the 1,000,000 gold cost now comes out of the alliance treasury instead of the leader’s own gold. The treasury must be able to cover it.
  • Vacation Mode: a kingdom that goes on vacation while holding Assets now loses all of them to The Unknown, with no compensation. The Kingdom Settings page warns you, and asks you to confirm before you switch.
Changes

3 Oct 2026

  • Alliance Members & Assets: new Legendary Assets table, listing every Hero, Treasure and Landmark held by the kingdoms of your alliance.
    • Shows each asset’s location, type, set, fame, alignment and effects (spells it grants and passive bonuses), plus its description.
    • Click any green heading to sort by that column; click it again to reverse the order.
    • On phones the table scrolls sideways. Tap a description to read it in full.
  • Collectable Sets: many Legendary Assets belong to a set, such as Storm’s Heart or the Apex Warband. The new Set column shows how many of each set your alliance holds, e.g. “Storm’s Heart (2/4)”. Sets have no effect yet, but start collecting…
  • Alliance Ranks: the Align button now sorts alliances by alignment, most Good first. Before, it did nothing.
  • Market, Current Sales: shows each item’s Level (e.g. 4.00) instead of the old Quality percentage (400%), matching the rest of the market.
  • Quests: rewards now show their Level to two decimals, e.g. “Reward: Weapons 1,000 (Level 3.00)”.
Changes

2 Oct 2026

  • New in-game clock: the top bar now shows the current game date and time in UTC, the same clock that news and turn results are timestamped with. On narrow phones it shows the time only.
  • Frenzy can now be cancelled from your Kingdom page’s active spells list, like other non-abusive spells. Everything else about it is unchanged.
  • Cast Spell page: now opens with no spell selected, rather than the first spell in the list.
  • Spell descriptions:
    • Damage multiplier lines now say which damage they affect, e.g. “Does 5x army damage to Weapons and Armor” or “Does 5x building damage to Castles”.
    • Acid Rain: its 4x damage also applies to Deflectors (now listed).
    • Warp Lightning and Warp Strike: now state that damage falls to as little as half when troops lack weapons or armor (Mages excepted).
  • Mutiny chance now shows 0% for allies in the target list, on Rankings, and in the “same target” warning. You can never abuse an ally, so you were never at risk; the warning was wrong.
  • Recent Events: each event now has an icon as well as its colour, to help colour-blind players: a sword for an abuse, arrows for a trade, and a tick for anything that isn’t an abuse. A key is shown on the Recent Events page.
  • View Turn Results: now lists newest first by default.
  • Alliance invitations now appear in green in your news, so they’re easier to spot.
Changes

30 Sep 2026

  • Cast Spell page: overhauled
    • New spell card under the spell list, showing:
      • army and building damage ranges, max duration and the description;
      • tags such as Abuse, Never an abuse, Barrier, Undispellable;
      • for a scroll, its power, turns and obscuring, and a warning if your Magic Skill is too low for full power;
      • for your artifact, its power and turns.
    • New cast summary above the Cast button: spell, target, mana, turns and mutiny chance, shown in red when there's a risk. Missing or invalid choices are listed in red before you cast.
    • Mana buttons: +1K and +10K (press repeatedly), 25%, 50% and All.
    • Duration buttons: 1, −, + and Max. Duration now adjusts automatically when you switch to a spell with a shorter maximum.
    • Obscuring is now a simple No / Yes switch.
    • Make Scroll now shows its full cost (turn, mana and gold) and the power the scroll will hold, and warns if you're short of mana or gold.
    • When you pick a scroll or your artifact, mana, duration and obscuring are locked, because the item sets them. Make Scroll is disabled too.
    • New green Clear form button.
  • Cast Spell: new quickslots
    • Save up to 5 favourite spell setups per kingdom: spell, mana (or All), duration (or Max), obscuring, and the target if it was yourself.
    • Tap a slot, or press keys 1–5, to fill in the form. It never casts on its own.
    • Slots are saved in your browser, so your phone and computer keep separate sets.
  • Fixed: Same Again didn't obscure. Repeating an obscured spell went out at full power with you revealed as the caster. It now obscures properly.
  • More spells marked “Never an abuse”: Aphrodisia, Choir of Cherubim, Chorus of Cherubim, Dispel and Spell Steal. They no longer show the mutiny warning when cast on other kingdoms, on the Cast Spell and Specials pages.
  • Fixed: Barbarians whose name ended in a space (e.g. “Littlewood ”) couldn't be picked from the target list. They can now, and new Barbarians won't get such names.
  • Side menu: new mode switch at the bottom
    • Menus: stay open keeps sections open until you close them.
    • Menus: auto-close closes other sections when you open one, and closes a section once you pick an item.
    • Your choice is remembered in your browser.
Changes

29 Sep 2026

  • Build page: building tips reworked
    • Each tip now shows what one full building gives, even if you don't own any yet
    • Effects are laid out in a table: what you have now, what the parts you've typed would add, and what a full building gives
    • New Pools table: shows your kingdom-wide totals for housing, storage, protection, fortification, training and so on, how much of each you need, and whether you're short. It includes every building that contributes (e.g. troop housing from Barracks + Castles)
  • Build page: new green show blueprints button – what every building does, its costs and upkeep, plus a glossary of terms like Fortification, Protection and Training space
  • Build page: new Clear All button, and the “Hire more laborers” shortcut is now a red button
  • Fixed: the Armories tip said each armory stores 10,000 weapons and armor; the correct figure is 5,000
  • Race stats: “Weapon Quality / Armor Quality” renamed “Weapon Study / Armor Study”, since they are study-speed bonuses
  • Gold protection fix: kingdoms were getting Central Bank gold protection without an alliance Central Bank. Now only alliances with Central Bank level 1 or higher correctly get it.
  • Spy and Scry reports: now hint when a target has access to an Alliance Central Bank (the amount isn't revealed)
Changes

  • Fixed alliance forum pin/lock bug, and added ability for leaders to delete threads

August 2026 · Beta launch

SMT Remaster 2026

Shadowmere development has obviously been through several phases over 25+ years. What I list below are the changes I implemented both in 2018-19 and in the last couple of months. Prior to that, Dogma and I oversaw a lot of other changes from around 2012 to 2017, including the introduction of non-Player Kingdoms (NPKs/barbarians), new quest functions, and a lot of rebalancing tweaks to races, spells, combat, the unknown and more. Depending on when you last played, there could be a lot to catch up on.

Features, 2018-19 & 2026
  • Player/user account rebranded as your “Shadowlord”
  • Some light Shadowlord customisation capability, various things to unlock
  • Account level achievements to strive for
  • Shadowlord persistent ranking (currently by XP, will expand to other measures)
  • The Temple shop, to purchase account level bonuses you can deploy anywhere (more options coming)
  • Accurate display of the “Rules” (universe mods) active in any given continent so you don’t have to guess
  • In game help page, and short overlay tutorial to explain the interface basics
  • Turn results captured in database, to assist with enquiries, concerns and allegations… is also good for bragging
  • Private Mail to the admin “pool” instead of having to track one down
  • Accelerators where possible, ie on the Build page tap the number in the AVAIL column to put that value in the AMOUNT box, or the PARTS column to insert the value needed to complete the next whole building
  • Swap of percentage presentation to Level for units, gear, and study
  • Improvements to Artifact creation by Dwarves and High Elves, plus a collection of pre-defined Artifacts available to be found in the Unknown
  • Comprehensive in-game spellbook reference
  • Reintroduction of distinct Alliance types (future option to have rounds which dictate which types are allowed, or not)
  • Comprehensive uplift in Alliances capabilities and importance
    • New metrics; fame, alignment
    • Improvements that unlock bonuses and abilities
    • Vassals and Collectables
    • Alliance-based Victories
    • Alignment-based spell unlocks
    • More alliance abilities (like the original declare-war-shares-map feature)
    • Potential for further extension
  • Collectables that can provide fame, spell unlocks and kingdom mods – plus the various ways that they can move from kingdom to kingdom and the Unknown
  • Effects, which modify your kingdom but are not spells
  • Forums replaced GM, AM, PM and RPM
  • Server-based Victory conditions that are game-monitored, so you know how to win and can track progress
  • Player obfuscation. All kingdoms begin with a random ruler name so you can decide how devious and mischievous you feel like being. Reveal your real player name at any time, or never!
System Enhancements, 2026
  • Upgrade to HTTPS
  • Account verification via email, independent password reset function
  • Rationalisation of three different database access methods
  • Major cleanup of database structure, can now cold restart and restore from backup
  • Progressive Web App enabled (on path to a Play Store presence)
  • Significant uplift to modern coding patterns, removal of dead/stale code, rationalisation of classes and packages (should be faster, has eliminated memory leaks, and several real bugs)
  • Chat no longer polls the server every few seconds, has a better async method
  • And we’re now hosted in New York 😊
